Colour Swatch (Finland)
(2019)
This series was created during a one-month arts residency on the island of Korpo in the Finnish archipelago.
The island exists in a constant state of flux: during winter, it is connected to the mainland by ice and snow, while in the summer months, it is completely separated from anywhere else. Working with the local community, this series reimagines sites of everyday significance within the natural environment.
This project focused on the landscape and image-making, with the interplay of light and colour becoming a symbolic structure capable of creating an artificial and natural worlds. In this spacee, the viewer becomes lodged in multiple contexts simultaneously. While concerned with these specific structures, the work metaphorically explores temporal depth, illusion, artifice, and spatial distance.
This exploration involved creating images that reflect the complex interplay between the natural and the artificial, examining how these elements coexist and influence the perception of the landscape. By embedding layers of meaning within the images, the project challenges traditional notions of landscape photography, inviting viewers to engage with the environment in new and thought-provoking ways. The resulting images offer a non-linear and multifaceted perspective, emphasizing the intricate relationship between history, artifice, and the natural world in the Finnish archipelago.
